Ahhh, The Big E, The Big Extraordinary, The Big Extravagant, The Big Exposition! Only one of those is right, and it may or may not be the third one 😉.
While The Big E is Extraordinary some might say Extravagant even. To us, the E stands simply for Eats. Every year we research, every year we plan, and every year we set out with one mission in mind: to eat delicious food! With backpack on back, Tupperware in hands, we set out to do just that!
From snacks to treats, and even a meal or two, we filled up on as many goodies as we could. Though try as we might the day went on and our list of “must haves” soon turned into “maybe next years“. But worry not, we didn’t come home empty handed. With all of our hard work, we’ve put together a must-have list of food from The Big E that you can look out for next year!
The Big E Savory Tidbits:
We’re gonna start this one off with an oldie but goodie. If you know me, there’s only one thing I love almost as much as my mom & Mandy, it’s cheese curds. They’re crisp, they’re crunchy, they’re full of ooey gooey goodness. There’s not much more that I could ask for, except maybe some more 😊. I won’t talk your ear off about how good fried cheese is. I’m pretty sure you’re well aware, and if you’re not, go find some curds, they will change your life.
Moving right along, I’ll keep this one short just because it’s another deep fried delight. We have a very deceptive basket of battered and fried buffalo cauliflower! Now, I know what you’re thinking, “Those look like chicken tendies Chris, I swear those are some tendies!”
But nope, I was just as surprised as you when Mandy bought a basket of these bad boys. Before she could utter a word, I snarfled a piece into my mouth and down my throat it went. What can I say I’m a hungry boy😜. Unfortunately, to my dismay, and surprise, this was no chicken tendy, it was a piece of cauliflower that was quite delicious I might add. We downed this basket and soon moved on to bigger and better contenders.
The Big E Savory Snackaroos:
If you’re wondering what a snackaroo is, that’s good cause it means you’re paying attention. A snackaroo is somewhere between a full-fledged meal and just a snack. It’s if you had just a hotdog without any sides. Something you can enjoy multiple of, without feeling too full.
Randy’s Wooster Street Pizza Shop:
Our first snackaroo is something that I could eat for breakfast, lunch, & dinner (if my body allowed). In the Connecticut state house, we stumbled upon a place called Randy’s Wooster Street Pizza Shop. It was time for them to shine. We took the short wait in line to glance over their selection: Cheese, Pepperoni, Meat Lovers, (a lot of bacon pizzas), Quiche pizza, whoa whoa whoa. Quiche? Quiche Pizza? We had to try it, and that’s exactly what we did.
Cheesy, with tomatoes, onions, and the perfect amount of spinach. This was a pizza pie I wanted to take home to the family 👌👌👌. Alas, there’s not a pizza alive whose lasted more than 3 minutes alone with me.
Rasham:
Next up on the list of snackaroos is a little place in the food court called Rasham. While my poor photography won’t do their establishment justice, we hope that a peek at their menu will.
We got ourselves some delicious chicken samosas as well as a bit of naan. I wanted more, I wanted so much more. Kebabs, Pakora, a KEBAB NAANWICH, but I had to be strong. There was more food at the fair, more food at the fair Chris, you can’t fill up at one place. I pushed back some tears handed the man his money and pushed on.
The Big E Mac Melt Food Truck:
Unfortunately, we pushed on to a place Mandy and I absolutely love. A place where we lose all control and completely forget to take pictures… A place *ahem* a place where mac n cheese meets grilled cheese. This is our yearly treat where we order a full hot-off-the-presses mac n cheese grilled cheese without the guilt. We enjoyed half of it then took home the rest in Tupperware (that we finally remembered to bring). That’s right, you thought I was joking, didn’t you? Wherever the food goes, our Tupperware goes too.
The Big E Super Sweet Treats:
The Big E isn’t just known for a plethora of savory snacks and sandwiches. They also have dozens of baked goodies ranging from homemade fudge, to assorted cakes, and even a pastry or two! The potential flavor combinations really bring the experience to a whole different level. But, let’s not waste time dallying, here were our choice desserts at The Big E 2023.
Mother Myrick’s Confectionery:
“You know, I’ve always wanted to try the Lemon Lu-Lettes. I’ve seen them every year, it just never felt like the right time. I think now is the right time.” – Mandy Big E 2023
-Mandy 2023
That was exactly the right time Mandy, because one bite of these Lemon Lu-Lettes was all we needed and we were in love! These little lemon pillows of joy are bite-sized treats perfect for any occasion. Buy a couple for now and a box for later, why not, it’s the fair so enjoy!!! At least that’s what I’d like to say we did. Unfortunately, we were a lil’ tips, and foresight was not at the forefront of our minds. On the upside, we know where to find these treats for next time. They can be found The Big E Vermont house. Or unfortunately, all the way in Vermont😞…that’s a really long ride. Next year it is!

For this next one I have three words for you: Tres Leche Cake. It is hands down one of my most favorite cakes of all times. Right up there with my very own carrot cake, Tres Leche is the spongiest of cakes south of the pacific northwest…does that even make sense🤔. Tres Leche is a cake made using three milks, unironically, it’s right there in the name. The three milks are whole milk, sweetened condensed milk, and evaporated milk. Which is surprisingly much less ‘evaporated’ than one might think.
“So, what makes this cake so special Chris?” I’m getting there, hold your horses. While the cake itself is rather simple, it’s what you do with the milk that makes this cake go from a strong 7 to at least a 700. After baking the cake, you mix your Tres Leche together. You poke a bunch of holes into the cake, and pour all of that sweet, delicious goodness on top. Slap some whipped cream into the mix and we’re in business baby.
Now, Las Kangris did something so simple, yet so unexpected, that I feel like I’m the biggest dumb out there. Little bit of cinnamon right on top of that whipped cream. The flavor of my favorite cake has now transcended. My tastebuds could barely contain themselves. Mandy, the love of my life, had to do the unspeakable. She had to take the cake away, because the day wasn’t done, and we had Tupperware to fill. And she had already gotten out next sweet treat to eat.
Cha Feo: Hong Kong Bubble Waffle:
Ok, deep breath in…..and exhale. We got a little crazy of that Tres Leche, but I promise you what we have left is more than meets the eye.
What we have here is from Cha Feo and it is a sweetened dough, pressed into a bubble shaped waffle. As simple as it sounds, it was the perfect follow-on to something so profound in flavor. Every bite was crisp like as a well cooked waffle should be. Every bite was unbelievably light and airy with just a hint of sweetness. These can be ordered with ice cream but, if you’re feeling adventurous, a handful of other fillings are available. We opted for a plain and simple waffle. To us, it made for the most enjoyable and least messy of experiences.
Since we were walking around a lot, no toppings was without a doubt the best choice. Every now and then Mandy would reach over, pop a piece off and toss it into her mouth. I did the same, and finally we ran out of waffle. The lack of mess was evidence enough of our smart thinking.
Downright Delicious Drinks:
You didn’t think we went though this whole day without at least a little drinky drink did you? We may not have gotten sloshed, but we wanted to enjoy our time with some sweet sips sprinkled about. Below you’ll find the two places that wowed us (for very different reasons I might add).
The Big E Wine Café:
The Big E Wine Café is a bit of a staple, in that we’ve been here before, and will probably keep going here. There’s always at least one open table plus it’s in the shade, and who can argue a wine slushie amiright?
I sat out ordering this one, and needless to say, Mandy took the opportunity to go crazy. Mandy got us a Blackberry, Strawberry, Blueberry, Raspberry wine slushie. Just look at it, it’s kinda hypnotic…
While for most, this would probably be way past a sweet threshold for wine, it was perfect for me. You see, I like to not taste the alcohol in my drinks and this drink was the perfect refresher after walking in the sun all day. I highly recommend trying this combination or find one that brings a smile to your face. I am sure you deserve it.
White Lion Brewing:
I did say that we enjoyed our drinks for drastically different reasons. Seeing that we jumped from wine to a brewing company, it must be a little jarring. Here’s my question for you, with flavors like Blueberry Marshmallow, Lemon Raspberry, Carnival Candy Kettle, and Passion & Peach Bellini, how could you say no? What sane person would walk on by ignoring such extravagant flavors? Not I, nononononono, I could never pass up an opportunity like this.
I ended up getting Blueberry Marshmallow and Mandy got the Passion & Peach Bellini Sour. I loved mine and Mandy hers, but we both enjoyed each other’s nearly just as much. My Blueberry Marshmallow, while still a sour, was soft on the tongue with blueberry at the forefront, and distinct notes of marshmallow. Mandy’s was tropical, but not overly so, with a smooth tartness, and just a hint of sweet to finish.
The Big E Favorites: Chris
I think you know my favorite, because I know you know my favorite. It was hands down the Tres Leche Cake from Las Kangris Food Truck. I could go on for days about the richness of Tres Leche. Honestly, it still wouldn’t be enough to describe the taste, the texture, and most of all the joy I experienced from Las Kangris’ Tres Leche Cake.
My hat’s off to you! I’ll be saving room for some food next year, so you better be there!
The Big E Favorites: Mandy
I may be biased in saying this due to it being our next stop after trying our sours, because I wholeheartedly believe that if there is an adult beverage that goes with this beloved food item, it’s beer. And that food item is pizza.
What better way to finish off the morning than with a Bellini inspired sour and breakfast pizza? Styled after New Haven, CT’s brick oven legends, it was crispy, cheesy, and a total wake up call to what we’ve been missing out on. Judge me all you want for saying this, but nobody does pizza like Connecticut!
In Memory of The Best Baked Potatoes:
We would like to take this moment to recognize someone missing from this list. On the side of the Connecticut house used to be THE BEST baked potatoes. Their size, without equal, their flavor, matched by no one, and their love for the spud, like no one else’s. Sadly, Danny Bell, the owner of Smokehouse Grill at The Big E passed away this year.
While much fun was had this year, a baked potato as good as Bell’s only comes around once or twice in a lifetime. If you had a chance to stop by, we hope that you always remember the sound of his bell ringing, and were able to give Danny a final Yee-Haw!
Thank YOU so much for making donuts that are so delicious. Your shop is just lovely and we definitely plan…
Wow, thank you so much for this glowing review of our shop,,staff, and donuts! I couldn’t have asked for any…
Of course we can! I haven't even gotten to try their sorbetto, but Mandy says if you mix the orange…
Can we go to Newbury at Christmas time ? Your descriptions left me drooling !!! XOXOXO
