Have you ever heard of….Dead By Daylight? No? Well, why don’t we sit down and have a little talk about it. (If you have heard of it, we still gon’ talk). Dead By Daylight is one of our most played games… ever! Having played this game on a weekly basis for over two years Mandy and I refuse to stop playing it. When the weekend comes rolling around, Mandy and I pull up a chair, our stuffed animal Boobi, and just veg out as a survivor power couple that has a good chance of maybe escaping.
That said, when the lights get low, our teammates get trashy, and I’ve died one too many matches. Well, let’s just say things get a little messy. That’s when Mandy and Boobi gather round knowing a massacre is approaching. But things weren’t always like this, in fact, there was once a time where neither of us had even heard of Dead By Daylight. I can hardly believe it writing this, but I digress.
It’s time to gather round and hear about how Dead by Daylight became more than just a game, for two gaming buddies. It’s definitely worth the read, that much we can guarantee.

What is Dead By Daylight?
That sure is the big question isn’t it? Superficially, Dead By Daylight is an asymmetrical horror game. Broken down, that means that for one, its player vs player and also a horror game. Still not a lot of detail am I right? Let’s get specific, this is a 4 vs 1, player versus player horror themed game. On one side we have the killer, a one man or woman army. The killer has one objective, to sacrifice all 4 survivors to The Entity (the omniscient being of the game). The killer goes about sacrificing the them by first injuring, then downing, and finally hooking them on a sacrificial hook. These hooks are scattered throughout the map so it isn’t some scavenger hunt.
With an idea of what the killer’s have to do, let’s get on with the survivors. Spawning in as a team of 4, there are 7 generators (gens) on the map, survivors have to repair 5 to power the exit gates and escape. Don’t worry the maps are not massive so finding a gen won’t take long. Sounds simple enough right? And for once YES is it!
Now for the fun part, both teams spawn into a map at the same time. The survivors look for gens to repair, all while the killer has already begun looking for their first victim. Once the killer finds a survivor, the chase is on! Our poor survivor, runs through a variety of tiles: vaulting windows and dropping pallets that stun the killer. But their efforts were all for naught. First taking a hit, then getting struck again, they’re put into the dying state. The killer picks them up, carries them to a hook and hangs them out to dry. Worry not little survivor, you have two more hooks…if you’re lucky.
Let’s Talk Mechanics (The Basics)
There are A LOT of mechanics to try and explain for a game that’s really just a glorified hide-and-seek/tag hybrid. And I don’t mean that in a bad way. Regardless, I will try to touch upon the more important ones.
Killers: You get to select from (as of the end of 2022) 26 different killers. Some of which come directly from classic horror movies/games. Pinhead, Pyramid Head, & Freddy Krueger just to name three. Each killer has three perks and a unique ability that assists in injuring and downing survivors. These abilities range from setting traps, throwing weapons, and even teleporting. While abilities are the spice of the sauce, your weapon will be doing most of the work. Using a basic attack on a survivor will injure them the first time, then another strike will put them on the ground. From here you can pick them up and hook ’em.
Survivors: Similar to killers, you’ve got options, 34 to be exact. Also, you can play as survivors from widely known horror movies as well! However, unlike killers, survivors do not come with a special ability, though they do have three perks unique to them. Instead of an ability, survivors can bring items into each game. These items include: a med-kit, a toolbox, a flashlight, a map, or a key, but they can only bring one in at a time. The med-kit allows you to heal yourself, the toolbox increases repair speed, flashlights can blind the killer, and maps help with navigation. The key is special, if you are the last survivor, a hatch will spawn use the key to open it.
*whew* I think that’s enough for now, but if this has made you even the slightest bit curious, I recommend getting the game.
Chris Got Pulled Into Dead By Daylight
Two and a half years ago, that’s how long it has been since Dead By Daylight and I became acquainted. This was a round the time where The Deathslinger was being released. I had been going to a local hangout spot with these people I had just met, which in retrospect sounds pretty suss. Regardless, I overheard one of them mention video games then a competition of sorts and it made me curious. So I asked what game they were talking about. This would lead me down a slippery slope where you either kill or get killed, but sometimes escape.
There was no turning back for me. What can I say, I was hooked, but little did I know that sooner than later, I would be the one hooking others. The next time we met up, to my surprise, one of them gave me an extra copy of Dead By Daylight.
The first time that I played with them lives on in my mind clear as day. I’ve played many horror games: Silent Hill, Dead Space, FEAR. But for some reason, to this day, I could not tell you why. But playing this game for the first time made me feel true fear. Borderline panic attack fear. This could very well be from the fact that I’d never played a game even close to this. Anything pvp that I played up until this point was first-person shooters.
With time my nerves have calmed and now I run killers like a champ. But it took a long time to get where I am and will take longer to get further. But I don’t plan on stopping any time soon.
Then Mandy Got Dragged Along Too
Kicking and screaming if you ask me.
No, it wasn’t quite that dramatic. Really I began to play out of curiosity (and a little bit of spite). It was around the time that Chris had just started playing Dead by Daylight, and I really wasn’t playing anything at all at that point.
My biggest introduction to video games was at the ripe age of six years old playing Pac Man World on the PS1. At the time, my parents bought this for my brother and me along with a handful of plug-and-plays. The difference being that the plug and plays had a manual save option, and there was no memory cartridge in our PS1. Do you know what that means? Every Saturday morning my brother and I would play Pac Man as far as we could, beating as many levels as possible, before my parents would have us switch back over to regular TV by noon, and ultimately loose all the progress we made. Over. And over. And over.
We thought that was normal! It was the original speed-run.
Besides overly advertised mobile games and the occasional nostalgia to return to Stardew Valley, I didn’t play video games. I wasn’t the combat-type. I wasn’t the loop-the-killer type. And I am certainly not the play-as-killer type!
But it was a particular night a couple years ago that Chris’ friends all pinged him to get online while I was over. I was too spooked to watch, and I wasn’t going to stop him just because I couldn’t enjoy it. So after a couple hours of him playing and me listening to them having fun, I thought to myself, “Maybe I could give it a try.”
And I did try it – and I had never been so scared in my life!
Our Plans for Dead By Daylight
Having heard about our introduction to Dead By Daylight, maybe you’ll want to give it a try. If you find yourself on the fence or uncertain, why not come check us out on YouTube! On occasion, you might even catch us in a live stream (that we’ll give plenty of notice for). Regardless of how you see us play, we hope that you have a blast! And also that maybe one day, we might get the chance to run into you all somewhere beyond the fog just barely out of The Entity’s reach.
If you haven’t already, leave us a comment for the content. Let us know what you thought of this post and even suggest what you would like to read about next. Whether it be a game, some food, or a place you think we should visit, we will see it and respond. Also, we cannot emphasize this enough, make sure you’re signed up for the mailing list! We post weekly on Mondays, but we want you to be as up-to-date as possible and not missing a single post/video/stream.
